In the spirit of the New Year, it’s that time of year where everyone is ready to take new energy and try something new in their lives. Maybe it’s a new workout routine, or maybe opening a new business. But for everyone, almost all of these goals have something in common: trying something new (that they probably weren’t doing before). A common misconception that’s made is having the confidence to take on this challenge. But you can’t just find confidence - you build it through a little thing called courage. So what’s the difference?
COURAGE is the decision to give something your absolute best - even if you’re not sure of the outcome. For our gymnastics kiddos, this can look like “being brave” when walking across the balance beam, trying class for the first time independently, or trying a new skill without a spot. At Hop, Skip, & Flip, we want to teach all of our kids to use these nerves and recognize trying something new should be exciting - not scary!
To define the term, CONFIDENCE is certainty through repetition. The simple truth is this: if you want to be more confident at something, you have to be ok with being bad at it - for now. Whether it’s working out, public speaking, or even gymnastics, you have to put in the time & the effort. In short - practice makes progress. If we want to get better at anything, we have to practice, and practice, and practice. And after that, practice!
So in short - courage is the first step. Confidence is what helps you continue moving. At HSF, we don’t encourage perfection, we encourage effort. Now that is how we build confident kids.
